namespace — The definition of a name space, which may be more than a name.

namespace ::=

A namespace is a programming language feature for ensuring that symbols have unique names. Namespaces often provide a reusable mechanism for assigning convenient short names to symbols that can be uniquely identified by longer names. The namespace element includes both the namespacename as well as any modifiers associated with it.

The namespace element isn’t appropriate for XML namespace URIs, for them, use uri with an appropriate type.
